Events

1.  KCHA BOARD MEETING - Due to elections being held on June 24, there will not be a monthly board meeting in June.  The next Board Meeting will take place on Thursday, July 29 at 5:30 pm at the shelter.  Public and Media are welcome.

2. APPLEBEE'S FUNDRAISER - On Mondays and Tuesdays, Applebee's in Kanawha City is donating a portion fo their curbside orders to the shelter.  This is a great opportunity to help out the shelter.

3.  NITRO WENDY'S FUNDRAISER - Nitro's Wendy's restaurant is designating the second Tuesday of each month from 5-8 p.m. as a time when 10% of all sales plus the tip jar will go to the shelter.  The Mayor is really trying to help the shelter with funraising and this is a great effort.  So, if you're in the area, stop by the restaurant to fill your belly and help the shelter at the same time.

4.  FREE TAXI - C&H Taxi has volunteered to transport FREE OF CHARGE owners and their pets to their vet only for the purpose of having their pet spayed or neutered.  They want to help curtail the number of animals being euthanized at the shelter because of unwanted pets which could be reduced by spaying or neutering.  The taxi driver does require the animal to be contained in a cage or pet carrier for safety purposes.  This service is being offered in conjunction with the shelter's Big Fix program.  Call the shelter or Margaret Drassie at C&H Taxi, 720-1791, for more details.

5. NEW ADOPTION PROGRAM - Board member/volunteer, Nicky Walters has launched a new adoption program called the "Gold Pet" program.  The shelter will be offering selected animals who are in their "golden years" to qualified adopters at a discount price of 50%.  The cages of the "Gold Pets" are labeled with gold stars.  Older animals are often overlooked in favor of puppies and kittens and, at the same time, those older pets are the ones who are the most traumatized by being at the shelter.  More and more of them are coming to the shelter by their elderly owners.  There are many reasons to adopt an older animal.

6.  THRIFT STORE - The thrift shop will be open on Saturdays from 10-2.  We need volunteers and donations.  We ask that donations be brought to the shelter in good, usable condition.  We do not take clothes, toys or shoes due to limited space, and we have no way to clean up dirty, moldy items.  It costs the shelter $84 to empty the dumpster, so please go through your donations prior to bringing them to the shelter so we avoid having to discard unusuable items into the dumpster.

7. EDUCATIONAL SPEAKERS - If you think your school or organization would be interested in having a speaker come to one of your meetings or events to speak on humane education, i.e., proper treatment and care of animals, etc., please call Donna at the shelter and she can put you in touch with the proper person.  Thanks.

8. KIDS' CLUB - Board member, Nicky Walters, has organized a Kids' Club that  meets e4very Saturday at the shelter.  They have various projects such as adopt-a-thons and contests.  It is a great learning experience for young children to educate them about the shelter, the adoption process and the care of animals.  If you think your child might be interested, call the shelter.
