Below you will find information on a variety of programs we offer at KCHA. This section of the site is new and a work-in-progress. So if you're looking for information that hasn't been added yet, chances are we'll have it up here soon!
Low-Cost Spay & Neuter
We understand that the cost of spaying and neutering can be an issue for many people. That's why we offer a low-cost spay and neuter program at KCHA. Qualified applicants will receive a voucher for a discounted spay/neuter rate. Male cats $30 / Male dogs $40 / Female cats $40 / Female Dogs $50. If you are interested in this program, please visit the shelter to fill out an application. You must also provide proof of income.
Kanawha County Spay/Neuter Task Force
Another resource for low-cost spaying and neutering is the Kanawha County Spay/Neuter Task Force, led by a group of dedicated volunteers. For information on how the Task Force can help with the spay/neuter process, contact Nicky Walters at 304-982-0086 or visit them on Facebook at The Fix Blitz
The Big Fix
In addition to our ongoing Low-Cost Spay & Neuter program, every year KCHA, in cooperation with several area vet hospitals, offers the Big Fix program! During the Big Fix, special dates are reserved for animals to receive surgery at a very discounted rate. The program typically runs from November through February with specific dates reserved for certain animal types. For instance, cat spaying might take place over a three day period in November, while dog neutering might be a three-day period in January. You'll need to call your veterinarian of choice to schedule your appointment, as space in the program is limited. The Big Fix is funded from our various fundraisers such as the Fur Ball. The 2011-2012 Big Fix has either already passed or appointments have filled up. Watch the KCHA site for the Fall 2012 Big Fix dates!
Foster & Rescue
Fostering and rescue are among the most successful ways of lowering euthanasia rates. We work with a variety of rescue groups to find our animals good homes. Please contact us if you are a rescue group that is interested in working with KCHA. We often need people to help with the transport of animals to rescue groups as well. In addition, we are always in need of foster homes for animals that may require some special attention. Contact us today if you would be interested in becoming a "foster parent" for KCHA!
Black Friday Adoption Discounts
Every Friday at KCHA is Black Friday! Did you know that black cats are among the hardest to get adopted? Well, we aren't superstitious at all - we love black cats! That's why every Friday you can adopt a black cat or dog for $5 off the regular adoption fee!
Join us on the last Saturday of each month at Green's Feed & Seed, located at 314 Piedmont Road in Charleston, from 11-2 for an adopt-a-thon! You can also find us at Blockbuster, located at 5711 MacCorkle Ave SE in Kanawha City, the second Sunday of each month from 11-2. Watch our Events section for notices of these and other Adopt-a-Thon events!
KCHA Thrift Store
If you've visited the shelter, you've probably noticed the Wilma Nester Pet Center, which sits to the left just across the bridge. The Center is home to our Thrift Store! Volunteers staff the store every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. during the warmer weather months. We typically close up the store in late November/early December and reopen it around March as spring sets in. Inside the store, you'll find a variety of knick-knacks, toys, books, movies, jewelry and many other items. We welcome donations to the store!
You can bring them by the shelter during business hours or to the store itself on the days it's open. Note: We do NOT accept donations of clothing or shoes and ask that your donated items be clean and in good working condition.
