On December 28, 2010, my husband adopted a little brown eyed boy from the shelter. I had not seen him before we picked him up from the animal hospital on the 29th to bring him home. I automatically fell in love with him just as my husband did the day before. We named him Charlie and he has to be the most loved animal around. Everyone talks about how smart he is. He was completely house trained by the third night home with only 3-4 accidents. He's learned to do so many things over the last 8 months. He loves to brush his teeth every night before bed. My husband and I would like to thank the Kanawha County Animal Shelter for allowing us to welcome Charlie into our family. He is definitely our "baby" and we urge others to give these animals the chance to become someone's "baby." Give these animals a chance at a wonderful life and ADOPT! :)

Today I went to the shelter not looking to partake in the act of buying a new pet but to my liking I chose of the many animals at this fine place.A slender baby kitten.Who in the shelter seemed to have chose me rather than me choosing him.It was an instant connection. In saying that I got him out to play.I was with my mom so I asked her to hold him while I looked around at the other cats.So I handed him to her and as soon I wretch for the handle to the gate seperating me from the other animals and him he meowed.Ignoring that in a selfish way I walked out of the gate.I looked at a cat named Ricky, then glanced back at my mom and soon-to-be kitten he was looking right at me. I said sweetly, "What is it baby?" and the precious baby just meowed. So I went back and held the baby in my arms.I clearly wanted this kitten and he wanted me so I purchased him.I'm now anxoiusly awaiting the shelters call.Let that be a word of advice to all the pet owners SPAY AND NEUTER

I have adopted several cats from the shelter over the years. My first Morris (Moe) was so sweet and smart. He could give you a High Five, but we could never get him to do it on video (David Letterman missed out on that!!!) When I said goodbye to Moe (1/21/01), I adopted several others including a Siamese (Coco) and a Ragdoll (Buddy or Puff Kitty as a nickname). I also have another (Morris type) named MoJo. He was found in the woods and we belived he was the only kitten that survived being put in a garbage bag to die. He's the real sweetheart. They are all such great pets and I would always recommend getting a pound animal. They are truly the best and you are saving a very precious life when you adopt from a shelter.

Jake was adopted from the shelter when he was around 8 yrs. old. He was the gentlest, most laid-back dogs I've ever seen. When we brought him home from the shelter, he kept running and running. He was so glad to finally have a loving home where he wouldn't be in a cage. Sadly, Jake passed away last winter, but he lived to be 14 years old and definitely touched our hearts. There are such wonderful pets waiting at the shelter for a loving home. I have also worked with shelter pets and have never met one that I wouldn't have loved to take home myself. Please open your hearts to these wonderful animals at the shelter. You won't regret it.

We adopted him in june.We named him Diezel he is a GREAT dog. He's so kind and gentle with our 16 month old son.We couldn't have asked for a better dog!!He's so humble and kind, the biggest baby in the house!!LOL.These dogs have a bad rep. but are extremely kind. The shelter let us take him out with other dogs to make sure he had no dog aggression due to the fact that we had other dogs at home. Please before you go and buy one from a breeder give one a most deserved home!! They need it more then any breeder dog! They deserve a chance at happiness they didn't ask to be put in a shelter, let them show you the love they have to offer! Thanks kanawha/charleston animal shelter for our new member of the family!

In fall of 2008 I bought a house with a big yard in a semi-rural area. I happened into the shelter shortly before Christmas. She quietly looked at me while I looked back. She was special and in need of that big yard to call her own. I signed to adopt her the next day and then went to Kmart to buy things she’d need. I wasn't sure if I was ready. I had been alone for so long and had gotten used to it. That evening I prayed for guidance. It was time to open my heart to love again. I named her Angel. I laugh more and play now that she’s in my life. She reminds me that sitting on the porch doing nothing can be good for body and spirit (as can chasing squirrels). She helps me get to know my neighbors, wakes me when I forget to set the alarm, and cleans my kitchen floor for me. She is an indoor dog who handles my long days at work very well. Whether I’ve been away for 1 hour or 10, I am greeted with the utter joy of a dog who is absolutely delighted to have me come home.

I adopted a puppy in the middle of July, who I found via Petfinder. After I adopted him, I visited him every day until he was brought in to our vet's to be neutered and brought him toys and treats and also things that smelled like me and my other dogs for comfort. I picked him up from the vets after his neuter and after that he was very ill, and at his worst was on 4 meds and had to be force-fed, we were very afraid we would lose him. It took almost 3 weeks for him to fully recover and learn to be a normal puppy again, and I don't regret a moment of it. He is a loving, sweet, amazing puppy who I hope will go on to be either a wonderful S&R dog or agility dog [or both!] and I definitely recommend you find your future companion at a local shelter! Rescue-animals make the best pets and the feeling of saving an animal's life is like nothing else. My fiance & I were looking to adopt to give our Beagle a companion when we were at work during the day. We found this little girl, supposedly a pekingnese/beagle mix weighing in at 13 pounds, she was half the size of our beagle and something funky going on with her skin- it was very rough and scabby and her hair was falling out! Yes the vet checked it out before we allowed her around my daughter and other dog. Within days of having her home she became extremely ill- she had two antibiotics, a breathing treatments, had to be force fed and within days had lost 3 lbs. It took us several weeks to get her healthy and a few more weeks for her to accept our other dog Bhelin. You would never know by looking at her now what a struggle to went through. Phoebe is her name, she now weighs a healthy 16 pounds and has all of her shiney fur back. We saved her life, unfortunatly they all can't be saved and there are too many that suffer. We can make a difference, please spay or neuter your pets!!

My husband visits the shelter often, just to talk to and give the animals a visit. One day, he came across a basset hound who looked so sad. He fell in love with him immediately and encouraged me to go visit. As soon as I saw him, it was love at first sight! We adopted him that day and renamed him from Ronny to Barney. Barney is so happy at his new home with his new friends, Cooper, Maggie and Ellie. He loves taking baths and getting brushed and taking truck rides, even if they are to the end of the driveway. He is a very smart dog and we glad he is part of our family!

I adopted a senior dog for half price at the pound named norman sadly he was only with us for a little over year he had a tumor on his leg when we adopted him everyone passed him by because he was old and not picture prefect which we are so thankful for he was the sweetest best mannered dog we had ever known even though we were heart broken for having him in our life for such a short time he left us with a lifetime of memories and a smile on our face when we speak of him I was asked if we would ever adopt a senior dog again and my answer is always the same you better believe it so please when looking at the animals don't pass them by just because they are old or not picture prefect you may be making the choice to leave behind a pet that would of brought such love and happiness to tour life and theirs no one is picture prefect rip Norman you are in are hearts and mind daily

My family and I adopted Princess from the shelter a few weeks ago. She is an Orange Tabby, that was already vaccinated, fixed, and de-clawed. We already had one de-clawed and fixed female who we adopted (non-shelter adoption) about a year earlier. Our first adopted cat and Princess are complete opposites, but we love the contrast. Princess exceeded our expectations. She is great with our toddler and very loving to everyone. We can tell that she has been spoiled in the past and we catch her doing all sorts of naughty but hilarious things. She has been a wonderful addition to our family and we hope we have her for many years. I was hoping her previous owners would maybe read this and know she is with a good family again. God Bless.

In July 2011 one (also a former "pound puppy")of our two dogs passed away at age 14. At the end of July I went to the shelter and adoped an 8-year old dog named Rikki. She is a very sweet girl, gentle with my two young grandchildren who live with me, and has made a wonderful addition to our family. Puppies are cute, of course, but older animals make great pets, too. Rikki is a great companion to me (even sleeps in my bedroom), and I am glad she will be able to live out the remainder of her life in comfort and greatly loved.

I didn't get her from this shelter but had to write anyway. I adopted her from the putnam county shelter when they were set up in petsmart. I wasn't looking for a dog but this pretty dog found me. She had turned 2 years the month before. her prev. owner had to go to war, he brought her here to wv to his dad but he wouldn't keep her. She already had been spayed and all up to date shots. I adoped her in march of 2003. She had never been in the house, she was use to a chain. She was great in the house though, always let me know when she needed out, and no accidents at all!! she turned 10 years old in fed of this year and I lost her in may of this year. Miss her so much. Best dog I've ever had. So glad that not only did I give her a chance but she gave me a chance. Very loving dog.

I had adopted Coco from the shelter back in the summer and had recently come up missing on Oct.12th. Yesterday I recieved a call from the director, Donna Clark, that there was a puppy brought in that mathched her description. God had answered my prayers, it was my baby. Many, many thanks to everyone who works at the shelter. I truely appreciate what you accomplish on a daily basis for the animals in your care. Sincerly,Jay

When I visited the shelter at the end of September 2011, I had no intention of adopting a pet (just wanted to visit w/ the puppies). I saw Boss Dawg (named Jonny at the time) & fell in love with him! Boss Dawg is 2, a boxer/bulldog mix, black & white with the markings of a Holstein cow. He has been such a blessing! He is potty trained, keeps me active, is my loyal friend and an awesome dog! Everybody who meets Boss comments on how beautiful & friendly he is. When I first adopted Boss, he was very sick & didn't eat for about a week. As a first time dog owner, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to nurse him back to health. We both pulled through with flying colors! He has gained 9 lbs, eats everything in sight & is as healthy as a horse (or cow!). I wish more people would adopt “Pound Puppies”. There are so many wonderful dogs & cats at shelters that, if given the chance, would be wonderful companions and additions to families. Boss Dawg sure has been!

It is not the workers fault that the animals are not treated. The shelter has only so much funding. You can't blame those who are using what is available to them to try to help. I'm sorry if you adopted a sick animal but please don't down the shelter. If the shelter wasn't there then the animals that do go there would be out on the streets which is worse than having somewhere for them to go.

I adopted a beagle mix puppy from the shelter in March of 1997. We named him Elvis. Elvis had many adventures with my young sons. He went every where with us. Elvis spent many happy days playing with two rambunctious boys who liked to go fishing and explore. We were very active as a young family. The boys grew up and went away and Elvis spent his last years sleeping and enjoying his peaceful golden years. He got old and sick and we had to say good by in April, 2010. it was a sad day for our family but Elvis had a good long life and he was very much loved.

Hi! I adopted my little mixed breed cutie from you guys about 2 years ago. I just wanted to say THANK YOU! At the time I adopted Layla, she was going by the name of Abby (I decided fresh start should warrant a brand new name, so she's now Layla), she was around 4 months old, skinny little thing, I believe she'd been brought back from adoptive parents twice. I couldn't resist taking her home, her little face just melted my heart. She's been such an INCREDIBLE dog. She was so easy to train and get aquainted to her new surroundings, she's wonderful with other pets (she has a boyfriend, named Brewtus, he's an english bulldog, and she loves him dearly!), she's such a sweetheart, always very sweet to strangers, I haven't one complaint about her. She's definitely got my heart, and the heart of all of my loved ones. I can't thank you enough!

In October, my girlfriend and I went to the shelter to adopt a pug puppy, but we saw Elli (then named Clover) and fell in love. She's 3-5 years old, but still a puppy at heart. When she was fixed, they found that she had a hernia, so we're glad we got her when we did. She had been there for months. She is one of the most loving dogs I've ever seen, and gets along great with kids and other animals. She's spoiled rotten and deserves every bit!

I adopted Diva, then named Annie, in October, she was a thin, white shaved cat. When she was handed to me, she began to purr and climb on my lap. When they tried to take her from me to see if she had been neutered, she protested vigorously. All the way from Charleston to Oak Hill, she laid quietly. Three weeks ago she had to go to the vet for an allergy shot. Diva fussed and muttered all the way to and from the office. Until then, she had always laid in corners and had very little to do with my other two cats. Now, she comes and finds me and demands petting, and the chairs and bed are her favorite haunts. Her fur has grown out to almost extraordinary lengths, and she is fat and healthy. The rumbling purr when she is picked up could probably be heard for five feet. One has the sense that once she came back from that trip to the vet she knew this is HER home, and no one is going to take her away. Merry Christmas to all from Diva, Velcro, Triplicate and Chowder, the Shih Tzu.

I adopted miss pasha belle in march of 2010 after losing my beloved karma to a hit and run. What i thought would be an easy adoption turned out not be so. This lil girl had a struggle from the beginning, she battled parvo, had kennel cough, and yeast infections in both ears. Today she is a thriving 40 pound dog who loves to play and never meets a person she doesnt like. She truly was a lil fur angel sent to me from above.

My husband and I were looking for a dog for our son's birthday...so we thought about the shelter, seeing that we have adopted our cat Ruby from there last fall. As my husband was looking around, he spotted this pup who made eye contact instantly with him. That was it, he was the one...so needless to say we now have a wonderful new family member named Max and everyone's completely in love with him even though its only been 2 days! He's a perfect fit for our family.

We adopted a border collie mix from the shelter back in June 1998, he has not only been the best and smartest dog we have had but the best companion. He has listened through all my heartaches and helped me through some very tough times by just staying by my side. He is getting older and dont have much time left with him, however we all are thankful God put him in our lives for as long as he has. We also adopted a hound mix in 2001 who had been returned 3x he was a great dog and would alert my mom when her blood sugar would drop. I am thankful that three families before us returned him so we got to be blessed by him, however I dont understand he was a great dog. We loved Taz very much, sadly he passed away from cancer in march of 2009

I found my terrier at the shelter 12yrs ago, his name is Newbie. He's a great dog, gettin' older but still has alot of SPUNK!June 09 we visited the shelter & my hubby found the sweetest, lil brown puppy in the cage behind the door. He was wearin' a lil' green scarf. My lil' puppy is boxer mix and has turned into a very strong & masculine dog, my bestfriend.. as he is a wonderful companion & very protective. His name is Micah. May 10 again visiting the shelter.... we came across a boxer that was very frail. He was about 7 months old or so. Apparently, lived on the streets and was picked up. We took him outside to the visiting area & fell in love with the sad looking but oh so sweet puppy. Prince is now a healthy, large boxer. And finally, lol, thru others sources we have gained one more family member... His name is Beau, he is a Mastiff/Lab mix and is about 5 months old now. The boys are very spoiled & loved very much.

Our Annie came from the shelter six years ago last month. She's the best investment we've ever made. Not only is she smart enough to wire the house to code, she's a devoted companion and a true member of our family. Have a heart, save a life and get a loyal and devoted friend for life! ADOPT, ADOPT, ADOPT! <3

My husband and I adopted Allie, a spunky, sweet, loving beagle mix, from the shelter in 2010. Her sister Katie, an Austrailian Cattledog mix who has never found a couch she can't cuddle up in, is also a shelter dog. They have made such a joyful addition to our home and couldn't imagine a life without our "fur babies." They are a bit spoiled, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

Me and my mother were passing by the shelter one day and just decided to stop in. Having other dog already from the shelter we weren't really in the market for another yet. When I first walked in he just looked at me and I new that he had to be mine. I had to ask my dad first not thinking he would let me have him. We pondered for two weeks and mom said that if it was ment to be then he would still be waiting on me and lone behold he was, this time even more excited then the last, like he remembered me. I brought him home that day he was 3 months old and I haven't regretted it yet. I luv him so much he's my best friend he goes everywhere with me always making sure that he has shotgun. Pound puopies are the best because they are so appreciative to be loved a will love you forever, have then a chance you won't regret it.
